The 1.6L was swapped for a 1.5L EcoBoost with the 2017 refresh. The current fourth generation (2020-present) went further still, replacing the four-cylinder EcoBoost with a 1.5L turbocharged three-cylinder as the base engine, alongside a 2.0L EcoBoost and a 2.5L hybrid or plug-in hybrid setup, all run through an eight-speed automatic.
That’s four generations, at least seven engine variants, and three different transmission families, which is exactly why fitment matters so much when you’re shopping for a used Escape part. Ford issued a recall (14S05) for 2008-2011 Escapes over a faulty torque sensor in the steering column that could cause a sudden loss of power steering assist. Even on Escapes that already had the recall repair done, that generation’s steering columns remain a common failure point, and they’re not interchangeable with the redesigned columns used from 2013 onward. If you’re replacing one, make sure you’re matching your specific generation, not just the model year.

The Duratec V6 and four-cylinder engines from the first two generations are mechanically simple and hold up well, though the 3.0L V6 is known for timing chain tensioner noise and intake manifold gasket leaks that trigger lean codes (P0171/P0174) as it ages. The EcoBoost era brought two issues worth knowing about if you’re shopping for a 2013-2019 engine: 2013-2014 1.6L EcoBoost models were recalled for a cylinder head coolant leak that posed a fire risk, and 2017-2019 1.5L EcoBoost models are known for coolant intrusion into the cylinders, which shows up as white exhaust smoke and can require a short block replacement. Transmissions.
Early Escapes ran four-speed or five-speed automatics, straightforward units that are usually the cheapest to source.
