Price is usually the first reason Ram owners look at used parts, and on a truck it adds up fast. A HEMI engine, an eight-speed transmission, a transfer case or a TIPM costs far less as a used OEM part than new from a dealer, and the savings can go toward the rest of the repair.
Fit is the second reason. Two Ram 1500s from the same model year can leave the factory with different transfer cases, axle ratios, headlight packages or steering systems. A used OEM part is the part the truck was built with, so it matches the original specification, provided you match it to the right build. That is why every BackToRoad order starts with your VIN.
Availability matters most on older trucks. A second-generation steering column, a third-generation power steering pump or a component for the 5.9L Magnum V8 is hard to find new in 2026. Used inventory is where those parts still exist.
Used only makes sense when you can trust what arrives. On Ram 1500 orders, we verify fitment against your VIN before anything ships, and every part goes through a 24-hour pre-shipment inspection. Our parts specialists are on the phone at 1-800-608-3868 if you want to talk an order through, and we ship across the United States and Canada. Every part is covered by a 30-day warranty, stated plainly, so you know the terms before you buy.
Some parts come from our own stock. For the rest, the parts locator tool searches our network of salvage yards and recyclers across the United States and Canada at no additional cost, so a hard-to-find Ram part doesn’t end at one yard’s inventory.
A truck that is down costs its owner money every day, and a used part that is available now often beats waiting on a backorder for a new one. Reusing parts also keeps them out of landfills.
Most requested used Ram 1500 parts
Ram 1500 owners come to BackToRoad for a wide range of parts. These are the ones requested most often, along with what to know before you order each one. To check availability, enter your year, make, model and part into the parts locator tool, or call our parts specialists at 1-800-608-3868.
Engines and cylinder heads
The 5.7L HEMI is the engine most owners ask about, and it has a well-known weak spot. Since the 2009 model year, many HEMIs have used a cylinder-deactivation system (MDS) with special lifters on four cylinders. When those lifters fail, they can wear the camshaft and cause a persistent ticking from the top of the engine. A broken exhaust manifold bolt is another common cause of a HEMI tick, and it is a much smaller repair. That difference is often what decides between repairing the engine you have and replacing it with a used one.
Other engines in demand include the 3.7L and 4.7L PowerTech V8s, the 3.6L Pentastar V6 (some owners report rocker arm wear that shows up as a tick or misfire) and the 3.0L EcoDiesel, which has its own separate parts. The older 5.9L Magnum V8 has a reputation for cylinder heads that can crack, so heads for those trucks are a regular request.
An engine has to match more than displacement. Your year, engine code and drivetrain all matter, and we check them against your VIN before an engine ships. Browse our used Dodge Ram 1500 engines.
Transmissions
Ram 1500 transmissions changed with each generation. Third-generation trucks paired the 3.7L with a four-speed automatic and the 4.7L and 5.7L with a five-speed from 2003. Fourth-generation V8 trucks moved to a six-speed before the eight-speed automatic arrived with the 2013 refresh and then spread across the lineup. Units from different generations don’t swap, and the transmission has to match your engine and drivetrain.
Some early eight-speed trucks were reported to develop a torque converter shudder around 40 to 50 mph, which was sometimes fixed with a software update and sometimes needed hardware. If you’re replacing a transmission on a 2013 to 2014 truck, ask our specialists what to check. See our used Dodge Ram 1500 transmissions.
Transfer cases, differentials and axles
Four-wheel-drive parts are some of the easiest to order wrong on a Ram. The 2011 and 2012 trucks came with a mix of BorgWarner, New Venture and NV246 transfer cases, and later trucks use BorgWarner units in part-time and on-demand versions. The right one depends on the truck, so we confirm it against your VIN.
Differentials, rear ends, axle shafts, carriers and ring and pinion sets have their own trap, which is gear ratio. On a 4WD Ram the front and rear ratios need to match, and a limited-slip or locking rear differential is a different part from an open one. Ask our specialists to confirm the ratio on your truck before you order.
Electrical parts, TIPMs and modules
The TIPM is the main fuse and relay hub under the hood of fourth-generation trucks. It controls the fuel pump, wipers, door locks, horn and lights, and its internal fuel pump relay is a known failure point. A failing TIPM can cause a crank-no-start, a stall while driving, or strange behavior like a horn that honks on its own. Owners report it most often on trucks from roughly 2009 to 2013, with the most complaints on 2011 and 2012 models.
TIPMs are specific to year, engine and options, so VIN matters here more than almost anywhere else. ECMs, instrument clusters, speedometer clusters and ABS modules follow the same rule, and as noted above, some of these parts may need programming after installation.
Steering and suspension
Steering parts are among the most requested on the older trucks. Third-generation Rams use hydraulic power steering, so racks and pumps from those years wear out from leaks and seal failure. Trucks from the 2013 refresh onward use an electric power steering gear, and some 2013 to 2019 gears were included in a recall for intermittent loss of assist. The correct replacement gear depended on where the truck was built, which is another reason we start from the VIN. Steering columns, spindle knuckles, stub axles, stabilizer bars and control arms round out this group.
On the suspension side, struts, shocks, coil springs and leaf springs are all in regular demand. Trucks with four-corner air suspension add a compressor, air lines and air springs that can leak or fail, and moisture in the system is a common cause of ride height faults in cold weather. If your truck sags or won’t change height, tell us, and we can help you sort out whether it needs a compressor, a strut or both.
Headlights, tail lights and body parts
Headlight assemblies are a top request on newer trucks. Because full LED headlamps are available on most 2019 and newer trims, the right assembly depends on your trim and lighting package, not just your year. Tail lights, front bumpers, side view mirrors and other collision parts are also in constant demand, and these are easier to match when you can give us your VIN and trim.
Cooling, HVAC and charging parts
Any high-mileage truck eventually needs an AC compressor, condenser, evaporator, blower motor, radiator or condenser fan assembly, or alternator. These parts differ by engine and options, so a 5.7L HEMI truck may not use the same part as a 3.6L Pentastar truck from the same year. Our specialists can confirm which one your Ram needs.
